Review of the day

A bit like on Friday, blinding flashes of light the evening before were followed by disappointment today…

All of todays tips again ran pretty poorly – but does that make them poor tips ?
With the benefit of hindsight, I guess it does – but generally the market didn’t think that, when the tape went up in each of the races…

First to run was Ironic.
OK there were a couple of significant non runners – but they didn’t account for the price crash that saw him go from 11/1 early to 7/2 at the off.
He was quite well fancied !
However, he never really looked likely to win. A series of sloppy jumps put him on the back foot - and he was eventually pulled up…
What made the performance particularly disappointing, was that the race was there to be won, with the favourite Daymar Bay also running poorly.
It was left to Christopher Wren, a mention last time out and the outsider of the field today, to pretty much lead from start to finish…

Next up it was the big tip of the day Liz’s Destruval – and she was another one that the market was very keen on…
Her disappointing run is a bit more difficult to explain. She had a massive turnaround in the weights with two of her opponents today – but that seemed to make no difference whatsoever…
She even travelled and jumped reasonably well (until falling at the last !) – the whole thing was therefore a bit of a mystery…
I guess they are not machines…

A few minutes later, is was the turn of Fiddlers Reel.
Again well backed, (10/1 into 6/1) there was again no obvious reason for a relatively poor performance…
In fairness he was a risky selection – but I expected him to either win or be pulled up – not to stay on into fifth place…

Lastly Sword Fish chanced his arm – but I had a feeling about what was going to happen with him, when I saw the market…
I honestly think that if he had been fully tuned for today, he could have gone off around 6/4 – so seeing him at 10/3 at the off rang alarm bells…
In fairness he ran a decent enough race –without every threatening to win.
In the fullness of time, I’m sure connections will say he found the ground too quick - and that might have been the case.
If it was in the UK, he might lose a couple of pounds for the run (the handicapper might think he had been a bit severe last time) – in Ireland that doesn’t normally to happen…
Whatever, I could see him leaving this run behind and reverting back to his Cork form, next time – provided the ground in heavy,..

As for the mentions: Gambling Girl pulled far too hard in the Royal Bond hurdle and was a spent force by the home turn. Her run can be ignored.
Don Cossack was a game winner of the Drinmore novice chase, thereby enhancing our ante post bet on Morning Assembly, just a smidgen…
Zaidpour nearly took advantage of a below par run by Jezki – but not quite.
The winner didn’t improve his festival prospects – but in truth, he probably didn’t harm them much either, as this wouldn’t have been the ideal test for him…

At Leicester, Dromgooland showed why I don’t tip in sellers (or even do official mentions !) with a thoroughly moody display; whilst The Potting Shed was a little unlucky to lose out to Balbriggen in a driving finish.
Hartside ran a stormer to finish third in the handicap hurdle - which wasn’t really a good thing…
Even if he doesn’t get a pound for the run, he has advertised his well being. Dovils Date was very weak in the betting in the same race and ran as if needing the outing.
Finally Lodgician ran an honest race to finish runner up in the handicap chase, losing out to the well supported Crescent Beach…

As I mentioned this morning , I might take tomorrow off – depending on whether I find anything this evening.
I’ve had a quick look and there is a possibility – though it will depend on the price.
I’ll send out an email at the normal time tomorrow morning to advise on whether here will be any action…
