King George VI Chase (Kempton December 26th)

Obviously I issued the tip on Friday evening, before the Amlin chase and Betfair chase had been run on Saturday…

I was hoping that they might produce results that worked in our favour – but it was not to be…
Captain Chris was declared a late non runner in the Amlin chase, leaving Al Ferof to win unchallenged (and I guess, enhance his prospects for the KG).
In the Betfair chase, I was hoping that the finish wouldn’t be fought out by potential contenders for the KG – but it was…
Cue Card advertised his chances in no uncertain terms – and Dynaste ran a cracker as well.
The chances of Silvianco Conti probably receded a little – though there is always the possibility that he will come on for the run.
Long Runs chances now look slim – but that was about the only positive we could take out of the race, so not great…

Assuming the injury to Captain Chris is only minor (he was found to be lame in his box on Saturday morning), he should be fine to take up his engagement.
I would imagine that connections may still try to get a prep race into him – possibly the Peterborough which takes place at Huntingdon a couple of weeks before Boxing day…

Either way, provided he does make it to the race, I still think that Captain Chris represents a solid EW option…
He finished an agonising second in the race last year, on unsuitably heavy ground.
Three miles on a right hand track is precisely what Captain Chris wants. I’m sure that this race is the main target for his season and I can see no reason why he won’t run a big race (even if he has to go straight there without a prep run –and even if the ground is again heavy).
At 6/1 to place, he still looks value to me – even after the weekend…
It should be remembered that Cue Card was well fancied for last years race - but made a horrendous blunder which effectively ended his chances. He jumped like a dream yesterday – but that isn’t always the case with him…

I would have liked yesterday to pan out differently – we could easily have been sitting on a horse trading at half his current odds if it had – but alas that wasn’t to be.
I’ve certainly not giving up on the Captain just yet though !
