No joy again this afternoon – which was a bit
disappointing, particularly in the case of Nozic, who as I’m sure you picked
up, I quite fancied !
However, he wasn’t up to the job and ended up coming home
a well beaten fourth…
In truth, I don’t think he was helped by the way the race
unfolded. He chased a suicidal early pace – which unsurprisingly collapsed up
the home straight.
By that time, Nozic was well beaten – and it was left to
the proven stayers, Paddy the Stout and Overclear to fight out the
finish.
As I mentioned this morning, I could have been interested
in Paddy the Stout - but I just didn’t think he would have sufficient pace to
cope with Kempton’s relatively sharp 2 miles.
Well, maybe in normal circumstances, he wouldn’t (he was
in last place and being pushed along after a mile) - but in heavy ground, on the back of a
frenetic pace, his stamina reserves came into play and he hung on gamely from
the other horse in the race for whom I thought the trip would be an
issue…
The importance of the pace of the race when the ground is
heavy, is something that can’t be over stated…
The days other tip, Adrenalin Flight, ran a bit of an odd
race…
He led the field for a circuit and still seemed to be
going well enough, when he put in a very slow jump at the first fence on the
back stright.
That cost him a lot of ground and most of his momentum –
and in a few strides, he looked beaten…
However, he then started to rally, and by the time the
line came, he was only 3 lengths behind the winner (he forfeited much more than
that with the one jump).
He eventually managed to grab third place (what else was
he going to do when I resisted the temptation to put him up EW ?!) – and it
could almost be argued that he was a little unlucky not to win…
As for the mentions, then Xaarcet plugged on into a
distant fourth in the opener, confirming the fact that he needs more than the
bare 2 miles: whilst Coup De grave ran a sound enough race, but could only
finish third…
On to tomorrow then…
TVB.
